Balls are timeless toys for all ages. In ancient Japan, mari balls were not meant to be bounced, but were just tossed or rolled on the floor, and spread across Japan around the 17th century. By the 18th century, bouncing rubber balls became more popular than the traditional mari balls. Since then, these became more of a decorative item for homes and women's hobby. Each of these mari balls are hand crafted using traditional threading and embroidery techniques. The core of these balls are made of rice chaff so they do not bounce. The threads are cotton and dyed mainly with vegetable extracts.
