Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu‘s canvas bags are everyday tools for every day of your life. Since 1905, this Kyoto based company has been using the highest quality canvas to make hand-made bag with methods passed down through generations.
Every Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu canvas bag is produced in pairs. Led by the expert who is in charge of the sewing, they are paired with an apprentice who is charged with marking the material and attaching metal parts. It will take 10 years before an apprentice is even allowed to use the sewing machine so it comes at no surprise that these bags will be with you for years as well, revealing their rich history and unique character every day that you use them.
From August 19th to the 27th, the Tortoise Gallery will host a special Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu trunk show featuring a wide selection of over 30 styles, that outside of Kyoto, can only be purchased at this event.
Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu refrains from selling their products wholesale or online because they believe people should choose their bags in-person at their Kyoto store to find the one that suits them best. We are happy to welcome an Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu craftsperson on the 19th and 20th to help kick-start this trunk show and and to lead simple demonstrations for Tortoise friends.
